Fam Trip: FireRock Golf Club
This past weekend, the crew rolled out to London, Ontario for a visit to FireRock Golf Club — and we didn't hold back. 45 holes in 36 hours. Two and a half rounds of golf, one incredible piece of land, and not a single complaint to be found.
The Setting
FireRock sits just minutes from the city in Komoka, Ontario, five minutes west of downtown London, tucked into the Oxbow River valley. The moment you turn onto the property off Oxbow Drive, you get a sense of what's ahead — the course is perched atop the valley wall before dramatically dropping down into the river valley itself, and that terrain shapes almost every hole you play.
Designed by Tom McBroom, FireRock is a par-72 championship track (par-73 from the forward tees) that plays anywhere from 5,672 yards at the White tees up to a demanding 7,183 yards from the back. It opened as a public facility in July 2004, and it's easy to see why it's built a reputation as one of Ontario's most respected public venues in the years since.
Classic Risk-vs-Reward, Hole After Hole
What stood out most across our 45 holes was how deliberately every shot was designed to make you think. This isn't a course where you can put your driver on autopilot. From the very first tee — an elevated, slightly intimidating carry across the Oxbow River Valley — FireRock asks you to commit to a decision and live with it.
A few holes that stuck with us:
Hole 2, a short par-4 where you can bite off as much of the course's only man-made lake as you dare, trading a risky carry over water and bunkers for a scoring chance with a short iron in.
Hole 6, a "maybe-driveable" par-4 that plays just 320 yards as the crow flies from the tips — if you're willing to carry the ball 250-plus yards over the biggest, most punishing bunker complex on the property.
Hole 11, tucked into a stand of 200-year-old black maples, where a delicate mid-iron has to cross the Oxbow River not once but twice to reach one of the tightest greens on the course.
Hole 18, the closer — a treacherous, valley-dropping par-4 with sweeping views back toward the clubhouse, and arguably the toughest finishing hole we played all weekend.
Add in the environmentally significant Savannah grasses, the ragged, handmade bunkering, and the old gravel spoil piles reshaped into dramatic, fescue-covered landforms, and you've got a course that feels like it was carved out of the land rather than laid on top of it. Every hole has its own identity, and that variety is a big part of why 45 holes never felt repetitive.
Conditions: Tee to Green, No Excuses
We couldn't have asked for better conditions. Fairways were tight and true, greens were rolling pure, and the bunkers were maintained to a standard that made every recovery shot a fair one. For a course that leans this heavily on strategic risk-reward design, playable, well-groomed conditions matter — and FireRock delivered on all fronts.
The Experience Off the Course
The golf was the headline, but the hospitality is what will bring us back. The Pro Shop staff treated us like family from the moment we walked in — genuinely welcoming, not the transactional check-in you sometimes get at busy public courses. The practice area was elite, giving us everything we needed to warm up properly before back-to-back-to-back rounds. And getting around the property was made easy with luxurious, GPS-equipped power carts, which — with FireRock operating as a cart-mandatory course — made the trip down into and back out of the Oxbow Valley a breeze.
It's the kind of detail-oriented, guest-first experience that explains why FireRock has built such a strong reputation among Ontario's public golf options.
The Final Word
45 holes in 36 hours is a lot to ask of any golf course, let alone one with as much elevation change and strategic teeth as FireRock. But between the Tom McBroom design, the flawless conditions, a staff that made us feel like regulars on our first visit, and a pub that had us fed and happy between rounds, we walked away already planning our return trip.
